Our Process
Imported Plant Process
All of our ethically imported plants are under my care for a minimum of 2 months before being posted for sale. I do this to ensure that the plants are well acclimated to the new environment. It is to also to stabilize root and foliage growth as this is extremely important.
When my wholesale arrives, the plants are shelved in a separate room from the main stock in order for it to be closely cared for. This is also a preventative measure for any plant pests or pathogenic contamination.
Sourced from Southern United States
My plants that are sourced here in the states are under my care for at least a month before letting them go to you as a consumer. These plants are separated from my imported stock initially but will eventually go into the main room where all 'ready to sell' plants stay.
Props
Due to my rare plant craze over the years, about 50% of our plants are propagated and grown from my own personal collection. I will frequently take cuttings of the inventory collection for quantity purposes.
Sustainable Media / Soil
K-Tropicals uses 'soil less' soil. Yes, soil less. Most big nurseries use peat moss as a soil option due to its natural state to retain moisture for longer periods of time in a greenhouse setting. Peat mosses are harvested from bogs WHICH ARE CRITICAL FOR BIODIVERSITY AND WATER MANAGEMENT. Extracting this at a massive rate causes IRRIVERSIBLE damage to our planet earth.
I find a fluffy mix of coco chips, chunky perlite, orchid bark, and sphagnum moss will aid in promoting stronger root growth through aeration. The goal is also to provide you with a chunky mix of amendments already to go. That way, if you wish to re-pot your plant from us, all you have to do it buy soil and mix in my substrate.
